On another list Umberto Eco came up. I hadn't read him in a long time. I checked out How to Travel with a Salmon & Other essays from the base library. The book was published in '94. The little "Date Due" slip glued on the front end plate says that it was checked out in April '95, March '03, and my own '06. That is my purpose in life; read forgotten library books, like exercising valves on mechanical equipment to keep them from corroding into position.
I had forgotten many of the essays but on re-reading their inherent charm came back.
Those of note are;
How to replace a driver’s License
Conversation in Babylon
How to Watch Out for Widows
The Miracle of San Baudolino (especially fine)
And
Three Owls on a Chest of Drawers
It is the last one that made me write this. I miss the many that are absent now days. After reading Owls I immediately thought: Only John Omlor is qualified enough to refuse to explain this to me.
