You could search around our old nest http://www.roughdraft.org/JDS/ for a pile of posts on The Inverted Forest. I think Salinger was overly influenced by the ghost of Gatsby. Oh, welcome.
(that should work on Mike, like a poke with a pointy stick.)

Hi! I just joined your discussion list and I'm quite excited to have found a
place to talk about Salinger and especially his work.
My name is Marie and I'm from Montréal, Canada.
Recently, I found a website where I could read several unpublished stories
by Salinger. The short story "The Inverted Forest" really hit me. I don't
know yet exactly why.
I've been a Salinger's fan for quite a long time now and my heart is fully
dedicated to Franny (to Holden and Seymour and Teddy and all the others as
well but not in the same way). But "The Inverted Forest" made me so
sad....... However, it has an unfinished quality toward the ending wich made
me think of Kafka. It was quite abrupt, as if the author was exhausted after
delivering the essence of the story...
Well, I'd be glad if anyone would care to comment!!!!
Marie
