It need not be restricted to "those days".  I speak from first hand
experience since I am a bit more than half Jewish(halakickally I'm
Jewish because my Mom is), I am Sephardic, I am of the Anousim, so
Tribal Judo is ingrained into my ancient  venerable clan.  Jerome is
just a Pansey for not standing up to those Ashkenaz shtetl wise guys.

and anyway..in the jewish community, from the little I know, the
"converts", 
especially in those days, aren't especially welcomed in the social tribe
all 
too grandly...
