Thanks for the info and details in your previous post. My experiences
with less observant Jews today would lead me to believe that a
bar-mitzvahed boy of an unconverted gentile mother back in the 1930's
(1919+13=1932) would have infuriated any of the Frum types in New York
and would have been scandalous even among the Haskala (secular) bunch as
well. I wonder if he received out and out hostility over this
situation.

I never should have said "conversion." It seems that she never actually
converted, but embraced both religions and raised her children to do the
same. The depiction comes to me from Salinger's cousin. Besides J.D,.he
knew
both Sol and Simon, Salinger's grandfather. He's also unusually close to
Margaret, and when his recollections conflict with hers, it carries an
extra
weight of truth.
