dan brown.  ha.  you know what's funny, is that book snobs and movie
snobs hate the dan brown/opie opus.  what's funny, is how much money the
davinci code is making/will make, in both mediums.  there's something to
be said about snobs having less say.
 
that being said, chuck palahniuk, is the guy i'd invest in.  when it
comes to books, invest in authors you like!  check out "haunted" (a
chapter from this book made me feel physically ill and that i should
stop reading, flee flee!) and "survivor" for what i think are his best. 
and, if you haven't seen the movie "fight club?"...read the book first.
 
in re the davinci code...i guess it doesn't matter whether or not you
read the book first or see the movie.  both are going to take you 2
hours to get through.  it's a good story, regardless of how
not-well-written it is (i read it so fast my eyelashes fell off), or how
well the movie is made (i haven't seen the movie yet, and would probably
wait to get the dvd from the library, except that the wife wants to go
see it.  2 more tickets, ye godless heathens!).  i hope my eyelashes
grow back soon.
