Hello fellow bananafish. Saw this discussion, read the NYT article and
thought I'd chime in from IT boredom. Some personal favs:

-Corrections by Franzen
-IJ by DFW
-Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson
-Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson
-Kavalier and Clay by Chabon
-Damascus Gate by Robert Stone
-anything by William Gibson
-The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
-the 'Eon' series by Greg Bear
-anything by Dave Eggers
-The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien (not sure when it was published
though)
-Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

oh and Survivor by Chuck P. is pretty good too. They are not american but
anything by China Mieville or Ken MacLeod or Richard K. Morgan would be up
there for me. Wicked by Gregory Maguire is excellent too. I'm just going
on personal taste here and for books that I know I will remember. Oh and I
enjoyed The Da Vince Code and Angels and Demons even if, god forbid, it
means I am considered to have poor taste by "those who know." :)
