Bijan, Mere Christianity was exactly the place where Lewis denied
being a theologian -- he defers over and over again to the "experts"
because he knows he isn't one. Mere Christianity isn't formal
theology. Most of it is very basic philosophy with an existential
bent until the end. Read Charles Hodges' Systematic Theology and
you'll see the difference. What most people think of him is
irrelevant because most people, even those who write encyclopedia
entries, have never read any real theology. Lewis was a Medieval and
Renaissance scholar of English literature who happened to become a
Christian along the way and wrote about it. People prefer to read his
religious works or fiction rather than his literary criticism so know
him better for them, that's all.
