So I'm teaching *Romeo and Juliet* again for the first time in a few
years. (I forgot how much I loved this play.) ANY-way, as my class was
working its way through the scene where Romeo whines about Rosaline, I
came across these lines:
Love is a smoke mad with the fume of sighs;
Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears.
What is it else? A madness most discreet,
A choking gall, and a preserving sweet. (I.i.198-201)
This brought to mind the scene in *The Catcher in the Rye* where Holden is
riding on the carousel and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" begins to play.
Of course, in Shakespeare's play, Romeo spouts all this nonsense right
before he ditches his impossible love for Rosaline for Juliet, which
brings me to my point: in a similar fashion, Holden ditches his
impossible plan to catch all the children.
Does this then presuppose that Holden will come to no good? I fear we
should keep him away from the apothecaries.
Best,
Cecilia.
