I just had dinner with him last night. Yes, he's written a sequel to
Catcher in the Rye. But he wrote it on a special acid paper that will
self destruct the day after it's received by his publisher's office in
the most perverse joke of American letters. He's also written a
series of Glass family stories that go forward from where the
currently published ones leave off--those are his real labor of love
and legacy to the world.

I shouldn't give this away, but Zooey marries Fanny and Buddy marries
Boo Boo, who had divorced her husband. Z and F have a boy child, B
and BB have a girl. They marry each other and give birth to their
only child, a reincarnated Seymour who kills himself after moving to
Massachusetts and marrying himself, but not until writing a cleverly
angst-ridden 34,937 page letter to himself trying to talk himself out
of it. The irony of it all is that he doesn't realize the act of
reading the letter to himself is what finally makes him kill himself,
especially the last 5,857 pages, which consist of a series of Haiku
poems alternately written in German and Sanskrit.

Readers are expected to learn these languages to read the poems. They
will -not- be translated.

Salinger has all this written and waiting in his vault, ready to go.
He let me see it. I particularly liked Seymour's voice on page
23,695. The rest seemed a bit pretentious and grating.
