I think if he'd thought it through in terms of his effects on other
people, he wouldn't have done it. So it's not so much that the Fat
Lady is being saved or damned but, in practical terms, ignored.
I think his own conscious motive was that he was too happy, and that
his happiness pulled him into the present, a place he didn't want to
be--what he wanted was some kind of detachment and distance.
I think Seymour was a Kierkegaard who married Regine rather than ran
from marriage.
