Oh, Jim, Jim, Jim.
Don't you see? She deserves sympathy.
(Good god, that rhymed.)
I read her book and Margaret Salinger's book when they came out. Their
stories are too similar and their experiences too heartbreaking for any of
us to dismiss either woman as money-grubbing. The truth is, a lot of
young women in this country go through similarly painful childhoods. (And
make no mistake, Joyce Maynard was a child when this occurred.) Few,
however, are famous enough to get their memoirs published.
Don't get me wrong; I still love the old man's work. However, I came to
terms a long time ago that our hero has feet of ... what's weaker than
clay? Sand?
He's not alone. There are men sprinkled throughout history who haven't
been able to live up to the standards they have set for themselves. Jerry
Salinger has just managed to do so famously, and in such a way as to cause
collateral damage to the people around him.
If he were truly able to reach that no-me thing that he's been so famously
striving for, he wouldn't care what Joyce or Margaret or anyone else did.
He would instead figure that it was what they needed to do in order to
find balance.
Of course, he's human, too, and weak like the rest of us. What else is
there to say?
Best,
Cecilia.
