[Bananafish] the disadvantaged Upper east side

I ran across something today that made think about poor, poor Holden,
Jerome, and Jerome's Ham-hock hawking pop;

 

One man asked a very poor man why he thanked God everyday for taking
care of his needs, "aren't you praying a lie?" 

"No, no" said the very poor man, "for me poverty is a need."
