Yeah, it's been discussed, but I think it's been years now. My
impression is that the older guy is in bed with the younger guy's
wife, the younger guy is calling while they are in bed together, so
when the younger guy says, "hey, she just walked in the door" he's
lying to save face.
Because the older guy knows he's lying while, of course, having just
slept with his wife, that's a double humiliation for the younger
guy--which only the older guy knows he's inflicting. I think he
becomes conscious of just how horrible and humiliating the whole
situation is, and conscious of his part in it. That is his epiphany.
