In the words of words of that highly misunderstood man, Montgomery
Burns, "Excellent!", but I will trade 100 comforts for one penny-weight
worth of clarity. "cultural detritus" is very provocative for a simple
image-thinker like myself.

If it's any comfort, Daniel, the Roman church excommunicated Marcion
in 144 AD. Orthodox Christianity in all stripes always recognized
Christianity's dependence upon its Jewish roots in order to maintain
its integrity. Unfortunately, this did not always result in
Christians treating Jews well, even though it should have.

Of course I agree with your second point, and your third for that
matter. Divisions between Hellenic and Palestinian Jews existed long
before the time of Christ and were simply carried over into the church
-- part of the church's cultural detritus, which it had to work out.
